40RTY reasons to...make your Will #2
Blessings of the day friend.
40RTY reasons to make your Will #2 - name the guardians for your children.
Yes, indeed, for anyone with children under 18, this is one of the most important reasons for having a Will in place.
Making your Will gives you the opportunity and headspace to think about who would be best suited to care for and raise your children if you were to die. It also allows for a conversation with the people you have in mind; one can never assume that those you'd want to take on parental responsibility are actually willing and able to do so. You might need to give them time to make an informed decision. What other commitment can be greater than caring for a loved one's offspring?
I often get the automatic response that grandparents would take on the role. Now, I have to say that this sounds nice, but more often than not, it's simply inappropriate, especially if said parents are well into their third age and elderly (same goes for naming them as executors and trustees, but more of that to come).
As part of the Will making process, discussing your thoughts with your ideal people should give you some peace of mind that you've made the right decision and also that they are willing and able to step in your shoes.
Give me a call to discuss in more detail!
