40RTY reasons to have power of attorney #4

Hi there.

40RTY reasons to have Power of Attorney No.4 - because mental and physical health is promised to no one.

I have a good grounding, giving me the ability to give advice from a technical/academic perspective (shout out to the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners for their excellence). But what is just as important and at times, even more so, is my experience with having to care for elderly parents.

Over nearly a 20 year period, I came to know well the stress, anxiety, moments of absolute exasperation, disappointment, sheer frustration, associated exhaustion etc. Conversely, I also know what an honour it is to be able to serve one's parents in such a way, to see them take a final breath and leave this world forever.

So, in my role as an estate planner, what I find toughest to deal with is when I am approached to produce a Will (or Lasting Power of Attorney) in an emergency situation; when an elderly person is in hospital after a fall, when their capacity is and has been deteriorating at a rapid rate, or when finally, the family have decided something needs to be sorted. Unfortunately, too often, it is too late. And at that point, I just cannot help but think 'I wish you guys had come to me ages ago'.

From personal and professional experiences, trust me when I say I fully appreciate the value and relief of having LPAs in place.

Stop putting it off; contact me, Jules, and I'll organise your applications!

Peace and blessings.
